Prepare accordingly, we’re bringing you twice as much music from local artists for this round. Here’s what’s in store for you on October 12th at 9pm on your weekly edition of KALX Live!
First up B-Fly hosts Ajar. Recently recorded in the KALX studio, tune in for a performance and interview with the band. From Vallejo California, Ajar’s songs are inspired, created, and mutated from their combined experiences and influences. The resulting music weaves between punk, post punk, garage rock, noise, and anything that suits their fancy. Ajar has played in bands from Madison, Detroit, Austin, and California. Now, by some crazy act of life, they find themselves in Vallejo, building a network of noise and nonsense.
Then, DJ Donut Monoxide aires a previously live set and interview with Con Permiso that was recorded at Down Home Music on February 10th. The Performing members of Con Permiso originate from previous bands: Spot 1019, Cat Heads, SF Seals, Wannabe Texans, Mingo 2000, Stymie, and Hobbit NYC.
Eclectic, organic, and sometimes reverent, Con Permiso combines homespun vocals with vihuela, bass, accordion, violin, percussion, and blendy horns to deliver non-standard interpretations and translations of standard mariachi repertoire while using the genre’s traditional instrumentation as a springboard for their explorations of obscure cover tunes and originals. Songs about unrequited love, gossips, carousers, popes, and drug lords—in styles ranging from cumbias to rancheras to huapangos to Norteños and beyond—keep audiences grooving and hips moving.
