Unique vocal performance artist, composer, painter and improvisor, Jaap Blonk, will be a guest of Amazing Grace on Saturday, October 26th at 12pm. Joining them will be members of local improv guitar electronics // percussion trio, Monopiece. Much like their music, this interview will be spontaneous improvisation!
Japp Blonk & Monopiece will play Tom’s Place in Berkeley on October 25th and The Lab in SF on October 26th. Japp Blonk performs solo on October 27th for Spruce Streets Concerts in Berkeley.
From around the year 2000 on Blonk started work with electronics, at first using samples of his own voice, then extending the field to include pure sound synthesis as well as work with analog synthesizers. He took a year off of performing in 2006. As a result, his renewed interest in mathematics made him start a research of the possibilities of algorithmic composition for the creation of music, visual work and poetry.
As a vocalist, Jaap Blonk is unique for his powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation, combined with a keen grasp of structure. He has performed around the world, on all continents. With the use of live electronics and interactive visuals the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension.
Monopiece is a trio consisting of Nathan Corder on electronics, Matt Robidoux on guitar and Tim Russell on percussion, which formed at Mills College in the Fall of 2017. They represent three parallel lines, meeting at infinity, conceiving the singular.
