This Thursday, May 29 at 4pm, Penny Royal brings the mellifluous laughter and the multi-dimensional ponderings of Laraaji to the KALX airwaves.
We in the Bay Area are fortunate to have a visit from this musical mystic on Saturday, May 31st at the Grace Cathedral in SF in collaboration with Sam Prekop of The Sea and Cake.
Laraaji’s career has spanned more than 40 years and almost 80 releases between the flow of self-released material, collaborations, remixes, reissues, albums and cassettes.
He took a non-linear path to the present: from stand-up comedy and acting in the cult classic “Putney Swope”, while on his way to being an early and integral explorer of ambient and new age music, to street musician, ethereal zither-player, deep listener, sound healer and practitioner and teacher of laughter meditation.
In Earth time, Laraaji has made 82 journeys around the sun – but his music is rooted in a sonic experience that, in his own words, is always happening. However, Laraaji became aware of this cosmic sound in 1974, inspiring his debut release, Celestial Vibration in 1978, under the name Edward Larry Gordon. Tune in as Laraaji expounds upon the mysteries of his musical origin and how the lost takes from that first session appeared on ebay only a few years ago.
Laraaji currently resides in Harlem and finds his time, whether making music or leading one of his laughter meditation workshops, to be happily in high demand.
