Dengue Fever doesn’t sound like anything else coming out of L.A., it’s a collision of ‘60s Cambodian psych rock, surf guitars, and garage energy. It’s vintage, but not nostalgic, more like a lost frequency you just tapped into. Dark grooves, heavy organ, and rhythms that pull you somewhere unfamiliar.
More than any previous release, Dengue Fever’s latest record, Ting Mong, embraces electronic elements: there are vintage drum machines, analog synths, a subtle use of sequencing and drum programming that conjures a different pulse. The band’s improvisational flair, always a crucial component to their live performances, was brought into the studio with mesmerizing results. Some of the songs we now get to hear went through many different changes, eagerly malleable to pure, spontaneous instinct.
