Vlad was a KALX volunteer from 1989 to 1992 in the Sports and News departments.
“I was a freshman at Cal and really into Cal sports. When I discovered that KALX broadcasted the Cal baseball games, I was immediately interested in finding out how I could be a part of that. I attended a sports department meeting in the spring of 1989, started volunteering with the sports department, and the rest is history.
I paid my dues answering phones, engineering broadcasts, chasing down athletes and coaches for interviews, doing sports stories and anchoring the sports segment of the KALX nightly news, working as a spotter or statistician, and anything else that I could do. The following year, I made my debut as a play-by-play announcer for Cal baseball and eventually had the privilege of being an announcer for Cal football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball games as well.
I also volunteered for the news department. For my last three years at Berkeley, I was in the KALX offices on Bowditch Street pretty much daily. KALX became my home on campus. Not only did I enjoy the volunteer work, I enjoyed the people, the atmosphere, and the camaraderie of the station.
KALX is a part of my college experience that I will never forget. If there had been a way to major in KALX, I would have!”
