On Friday, September 8th @ 7pm, Melodrama speaks with Australian producer, songwriter, and collaborator, Mallrat, ahead of her tour stop at Bimbo’s 365 in SF on September 12th.

Mallrat – aka Grace Shaw – is a master of clever, timeless pop. Her trio of early EPs – Uninvited (2016), In The Sky (2018), Driving Music (2019) – are documents of an artist on the rise.

Mallrat has garnered attention from the NY Times, NYLON, NPR, and more. PAPER named her in their “100 Women Revolutionizing Pop,” after making it onto the “Best of” lists by The Fader, Billboard, NOISEY, NME, Triple J, and Teen Vogue.

At home in Australia, she continues to place Top 5 on Triple J charts. In the states, she made her late-night TV performance debut on the Late Late Show With James Corden, while in the UK, winning “Best Australian Solo Act” at the NME Awards.

She has toured both at home and internationally, including European and North American support for Maggie Rogers, Post Malone, and King Princess, selling out headline shows from London to New York, and collecting fans in the likes of Mark Ronson and Azealia Banks along the way.

Tune in on Wednesday, September 6th @ 2PM to hear Excuse My French speak with NYC based jazz // rock musician, Rachel Z, ahead of her shows at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley on September 8th & 9th.

Rachel Z is a keyboardist with a long history of award-winning performances in the worlds of jazz and rock. She won a Grammy for Highlife with Wayne Shorter, on which she orchestrated the synthesizers, played piano, and was music director for the Highlife tour.

In addition to her 12 albums as bandleader and her work in bands such as Pino Daniele, Steps Ahead, Vertú, Al Di Meola, the Omar Hakim Experience, and OZmosys(her band with Omar Hakim), she has played and toured with artists like George Coleman, Bobby Watson, George Garzone, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, Terri Lyne Carrington, Al Di Meola, and Regina Carter. She came to worldwide prominence in the Peter Gabriel concert films Growing Up Live and Still Growing Up Live.

Since 2000, Rachel has been a Professor of Jazz and Contemporary Music Studies at The New School University in New York. Since 2022 also a Professor of Jazz Studies and Electronic Music at Montclaire State University Cali School of the Arts

Her newest recording, Sensual will be released in September 2023 and will feature a companion video by Miho Morimoto.

Carnacki recently spoke to Nova Scotia duo, Mama’s Broke, when they passed through the Bay Area to play The Lost Church.  Tune in on Sunday, September 3rd @ 9:30PM to hear their conversation.

Mama’s Broke is a powerful duo that came together on the road, which continues to shape their unique gritty style. Their complimentary voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle an array of instruments including fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. Original songwriting combined with folk traditions create a compelling performance, delivered with heart and raw energy.

Mama’s Broke have spent the past nine years in a near-constant state of transience, pounding the transatlantic tour trail. They’ve brought their dark, fiery folk-without-borders sound to major festivals and DIY punk houses alike, absorbing traditions from their maritime home in Eastern Canada all the way to Ireland and Indonesia.

Nowhere is the duo’s art-in-motion approach more apparent than on their long-awaited JUNO nominated sophomore record Narrow Line (released May 2022 on Free Dirt Records) It’s the sound of nowhere in particular, yet woven with a rich synthesis of influences that knows no borders.

Guitarist, composer, and bandleader, Will Bernard, joins The Muse on Monday, September 4th  @ 4PM to discuss his recent album with Beth Custer, Sky, and his upcoming string of shows in the Bay Area.

Will Bernard’s unique guitar playing was formed from the rich cultural roots of the San Francisco Bay Area. He studied classical, jazz, and Indian, played in basements and coliseums, has absorbed the Bay Area Multi-Kulti, the funk of New Orleans, and the New York downtown edge.

He’s performed and/or recorded with Charlie Hunter, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, John Medeski, Bill Laswell, Ben Sidran, Peter Apfelbaum, Dr. John, Tom Waits and many others. His 2007 album Party Hats and his 1997 release with T.J. Kirk, If Four Was One, were nominated for a Grammy.  Pond Life (2022) on Dreck to Disk is his eleventh release as a bandleader. Will lives in Brooklyn, NY.

Tune in on Friday, September 1st @ 2PM when Mr. Green Genes sits down with Latin Grammy nominated, Brazilian singer-songwriter, Rogê, ahead of his show on September 17th at The Chapel in SF.

Charismatic and scruffy, with a distinctively raspy yet boyish voice, Rogê (born Roger José Cury) gained an avid following for his swinging samba-funk, tinged with Brazilian Soul. His acclaim rose when he co wrote the theme song for the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

Rogê’s first American-made album, Curyman, was lavishly produced by the Budos Band’s Thomas Brenneck.  The album explores themes of nature, the Indian and African roots of Brazil, and endurance in times of strife. Its release originally fell on the Festa de Iemanjá, an annual Brazilian holiday in honor of the goddess of the sea; like Rogê’s album, it’s an occasion of cleansing and rebirth.
