The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, was a moment of LGBT history in 1966 when more than 100 trans women took to the streets, protesting ongoing police harassment, brutality, and harassment. Opening on April 11th at 345 Larkin Street, the characters and events from that August night are coming alive in San Francisco again through an immersive play of the same name, Compton’s Cafeteria Riot.
This play offers a moment of questioning, a moment of exploration in which the audience can make the choice: “What would I do if I were there then?” KALX DJ Reality Check sat down with the writers of the show, Mark Nassar and Colette LeGrande, along with the show’s director, Ezra Reaves, in the month before the curtain opens to learn a bit more about the story and the praxis of turning local history into a show. Tune in on Tuesday, March 25th at 10:30am to hear their discussion.
