Danishta Rivero Interview

Posted on September 6, 2024

Multiple head shots of Danishta.

On Thursday, September 12th at 11am, The Genderwave welcomes Oakland based improviser, performer, and sound artist, Danishta Rivero, to the KALX studios for a live interview ahead of her upcoming performance at this year’s SF Electronic Music Festival at The Audium on September 19th.

Danishta Rivero explores the artifacts resulting from heavy processing of the voice and their relationship to its acoustic resonance.  She focuses on the human voice and its transformation through technology, and the ways technology and the body come up against each other in the reconfiguration of identity.

As a soloist, Rivero often performs as Caribay, conjuring the eponymous mountain spirit, whose laments cause avalanches.  She is a member of electro-acoustic duo Voicehandler with percussionist Jacob Felix Heule and is also half of Las Sucias, a feminist tropical noise duo with Alexandra Buschman-Román.
