As a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley, Ed Feng studied abstract aspects of statistical physics and how they apply to single molecule experiments. In applying that knowledge to sports, he was able to develop The Power Rank algorithm for ranking teams and forecasting the outcome of future games. Here at Cal, this work has obvious implications for the upcoming Big Game. This episode of Spectrum will explore his path from academia to Silicon Valley start up and discuss the burgeoning field of sports analytics.
