On the next Fiat Lux Redux, Tuesday, September 16 at 9 AM, Gwyneth Shaw, host of the Berkeley Law podcast Voices Carry, talks with UC Berkeley Law Professors Daniel Farber and Jonathan Gould on The Constitution, Congress, and Democracy and the division of powers between the President and Congress in the United States. They discuss the limits on presidential power, the constitutional authority of Congress to control government spending, as well as the importance of the separation of powers and the system of checks and balances.
Farber and Gould are experts on presidential power, constitutional law, and the U.S. Congress and are the faculty directors of the law school’s Christopher Edley Jr. Center on Law & Democracy. The center’s mission is to defend and strengthen democratic institutions through research and public leadership, and this episode showcases how the center is responding to contemporary legal and political challenges.

Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
