Since the 2022 Dobbs decision, the legal and social fabric of reproductive rights has shifted dramatically. On the next Fiat Lux Redux, Tuesday, May 12 at 9 AM, Arneta Rogers, Executive Director of UC Berkeley Law’s Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ) and a leading advocate for racial equity and bodily autonomy, speaks with Berkeley Law Voices Carry podcast host Gwyneth Shaw about the legal and social shifts following the 2022 Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health decision, where the Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman’s right to an abortion.
UC Berkeley’s CRRJ is the first law-school-based interdisciplinary think tank on reproductive issues and a key hub for academics, practitioners, advocates, and activists. Under Rogers’ leadership, the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice has shifted its focus to connecting abortion rights to a broader reproductive justice agenda, opposing the criminalization of bodily autonomy, and combating threats to democracy, linking reproductive freedom to the health of the democratic process.
Before joining CRRJ, Rogers led the Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Justice program at the ACLU of Northern California where she spearheaded legislative and litigation strategies to protect bodily autonomy and expand healthcare access. A graduate of UC Law San Francisco, her work focuses on the intersections of state surveillance, systemic justice, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
Fiat Lux Redux presents previously aired lectures, conversations, and podcasts originating on the campus of UC Berkeley every other Tuesday from 9am to 9:30am. These often-lengthy original programs have been edited to a 30-minute format by experienced KALX producers. The show’s name, Latin for “Let there be light”, is a reference to the University of California’s motto, which is also Fiat Lux. The show’s goal is to provide listeners with a window into the intellectual and cultural life of UC Berkeley and to showcase the wide range of subjects and diversity of thought and ideas that are present at UC Berkeley.
Berkeley Law Voices Carry episode #16 originally aired on August 21, 2025. This episode of Fiat Lux Redux was edited by Erin Foster for KALX Berkeley. If you have questions or comments about Fiat Lux Redux, contact lisa.katovich@gmail.
