Posted on November 3, 2023

Velvet Einstein recently spoke with multi-percussionist // marimbist, Haruka Fujii, ahead of her appearance with the Silkroad Ensemble at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley on November 17th.

Tune in on Thursday, November 9th @ 2:30PM to hear about the mission of the Silk Road Ensemble and their current American Railroad project, tracing the history of musical instruments all along the silk road, and creating spaces for people to gather and experience different cultures through storytelling, sounds, and tastes.

Haruka Fujii has become one of the most prominent solo percussionists and marimbists of her generation. She has won international acclaim for her interpretations of contemporary music, having performed numerous premieres of works from luminary composers.  Since 2010, Ms. Fujii has performed as an artist of the Grammy Award winning Silkroad Ensemble, joining a group of international musicians founded by Yo-Yo Ma and serves as one of the artistic leadership team alongside with the artistic director Rhiannon Giddens.

You can catch Haruka Fuji & Silkroad Ensemble with Rhiannon Giddens on campus on 11/17 for Cal Performances Presents: American Railroad.
