Tune in on Monday, March 10th at 1pm for a special airing of Rare Earth’s interview with Henry Jones, the label head at Smiling C Records.
Emerging from the internet blog era, Jones and the team at Smiling C sought out obscure sounds from the farthest corners of the web, driven by a passion for musical discovery and sharing.
“Smiling C is an archival project dedicated to sharing the stories, songs, and aesthetics of under-appreciated artists. We produce a collection of records, documentaries, photos, and interviews to highlight musicians who didn’t receive the recognition they deserved for taking creative risks during their time,” Jones explains.
Since its inception, Smiling C Records has released a diverse range of music, from eclectic dance floor hits (such as Shams Dinn and The Voice of Love compilation) to New Age sounds from Mexico (like German Bringas) and even the long-lost lo-fi Americana folk found in the America Dream Reserve compilation.
In this interview, Rare Earth and Henry discuss the philosophy behind the label, the motivations behind their releases, and some exciting upcoming compilations still in the works.
