Tune in on Friday, October 24th from 1pm-3pm for a very special treat: Oakland-based musician Joel Cusumano drops by the KALX studios for a guest DJ session and lively interview with Your Mom ahead of the upcoming release show for his solo debut album Waxworld on Sunday, October 26th at the Little Hill Lounge in El Cerrito.
Joel has been a Bay Area underground staple for years as the frontman of Sob Stories as well as the guitarist and collaborator in a wide-ranging lineup of bands such as Cocktails, R.E. Seraphin, and Body Double. His fiery and palpably catchy power pop debut solo LP Waxworld balances quirky hooks and exuberant melodies with deeply introspective lyrics. Joel ponders his insignificance in a chaotic world and works through heartbreak and mental illness as he blasts out buzzy power pop earworms. A fascination with ancient and medieval art and history are as abundant as the nods to left-of-the-dial college rock heroes like REM, Teenage Fanclub, and Pavement.
Tune in to hear Joel play songs from his new album as well as guest DJ songs that informed his writing and maybe a few that he just thinks rock.
Waxworld will be released on 10/24 via Dandy Boy Records.
