Tune in on Saturday, November 2nd at 4:30pm to hear Frontal Lobe speak with Vallejo-based experimental image and sound artist John Davis.
His new album Landlines (Students of Decay) has spiritual roots in the Northern California landscape. Davis himself writes, “In a general sense the conceit here is nostalgia, a desire to reflect on the importance of connection – to ourselves and to the world around us. The title is, of course, a euphemism for the telephone, but I am also considering landscape, horizons, and infrastructure, as well as the invisible lines that connect us, the threads that bind us, and the communities that form us.”
Through live performance, studio-based projects, workshops and residencies, Davis focuses on work that encourages sensory response through unexpected uses of traditional media. As a musician, he works with stringed, percussion, and electronic instruments, and his music has been released on the Root Strata, Digitalis, Students of Decay, Bimodal Press and Peasant Magik labels in the US, and the obs label, Rostov On Don, Russia.
John also runs Bimodal Press, a tiny publication outlet that highlights San Francisco Bay Area experimental music, film and related ephemera. The label also serves as a home to both the Gravity Spells I and Gravity Spells II projects, and is committed to ongoing collaborations with Bay Area media artists, musicians and writers.
