Join Jon The Reptilian on Monday, June 1st at 4pm when he speaks with Mongolian rock group, The HU, ahead of their show at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz on June 5th.
Founded in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, The HU blend traditional Mongolian instrumentation and throat singing with Western rock in what they call “Hunnu Rock.” Comprised of producer Dashkaalong with members Gala, Jaya, Temka, and Enkush, are a modern rock group rooted in the tradition of their homeland. The band’s name translates to the Mongolian root word for human being.
Since their debut, the band has been #1 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, #1 on the Top New Artist Albums, and Top 5 Globally on Hard Rock Music Album Charts (US, Canada, UK, and more). They have toured the world extensively, with sold out shows in Europe, the UK, and the United States.
Their lyrics are entirely, and very deliberately, all in Mongolian. “If you learn the language and translate our lyrics, you’ll understand the context even more – the background of why we chose these words,” explains frontman Gala, who is the group’s throat singer and morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) player. “Hopefully we will encourage people to speak more Mongolian and become interested Mongolian culture. It’s a very rich culture and it needs to be represented.”
Now, as The HU gear up for the release of their highly-anticipated third album in 2026, they’re taking things even further. Knuckling down to work at their second home of Nature Sound Studio in Ulaanbaatar.
