Join Amazing Grace on Saturday, December 21st at 2pm when she re-broadcasts an interview from March 20th, 2019 with groundbreaking tabla giant, Zakir Hussain.
Hussain recently passed away, in a San Francisco hospital, of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. He was 73 years old.
Zakir Hussain (1951-2024) was far more than a top tabla player. His astounding career took him from accompanying some of India’s finest musicians to pioneering East-meets-West groups here in America after his move to California in 1971.
He composed for both modern and Indian classical dance, wrote scores for both Bollywood and famous American films (starting with Apocalypse Now no less), collaborated with top jazz players, even did a bit of acting.
In March of 2019 he sat down with Amazing Grace in the KALX studios, talking about his life journey, ideas about collaboration, and music’s universality. Tune in to hear their conversation and selections of his multi award-winning music.
